Making Massive ‘Rides’ to Combat Cancer
Harbour Air is proud to not only sponsor but be an active participant in BC Cancer’s Ride to Conquer Cancer. Last year our team of 24-riders helped raise more than $80,000. And while we’ve made huge strides ‘rides’ forward, unfortunately, so too has this destructive disease.
So, we’re upping our game and our goal: to $500,000
Our goal: Raise approximately $500,000 to launch a three-year program called LOGIC (Liquid Biopsies of Gastrointestinal Cancers). Biopsies are a standard diagnostic tool for most types of cancers, but can be invasive, are expensive to the medical system and cause considerable discomfort for patients. We will be funding a project to study the efficacy of simply using blood samples to detect cancer in patients.
So What? We’re funding a game-changing new blood test that could act as a crystal ball in predicting a person’s response and outcome to cancer treatment. We can reduce pain, cost, and bring hope to thousands of people facing cancer.
How: How ever we can, whatever it takes.
- 100% of our Share the Fare program, which donates $1 on behalf of every passenger, every Friday, will be donated to the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
- We’re a Peloton Sponsor of this year’s Ride to Conquer Cancer
- We’re entering a team of more than 25 to ride and fundraise all summer long
- We’re hosting community and staff fundraisers to raise support, awareness and as many dollars as we can!
- Want to know more? Our founder and CEO, Greg McDougall, like many of you have been touched by Cancer all too personally. We’re doing it for him, for you and for everyone that’s been affected, lost the battle but never given up hope.
Want to Help? A few ways you can be a part of this initiative are:
- Donating to our Team: conquercancer.ca/goto/HarbourAir2019
100% of every dollar donated goes directly to our program and tax receipts are provided. - Taking part in our community fundraisers. Weekly BBQs at our terminals, riding kit auctions, Friday Sunset Sessions, and opportunities for special deals on souvenirs are all being launched. Follow us on social media to find out more about our upcoming fundraising events and take part where you can. Again, anything you can give is appreciated.
- Fly on Fridays! Leading up to the ride on August 24-25th, 100% of the funds raised through our Share the Fare Friday’s program will be going towards our team’s goal. Book now!

As you walk down the Seawall in Vancouver and weave through the iconic Coal Harbour area you can’t help but notice the bustling harbour below. The sounds of small taxi boats, cruise ships, freighters and floatplanes echo softly between the buildings at the waters edge.
On a yearly basis, the Vancouver Harbour sees between 60,000 to 70,000 takeoffs and landings each year – and that’s just seaplane traffic.

About another 25,000 to 30,000 aircrafts also enter the airspace. Which makes Vancouver Harbour likely the busiest commercial water aerodrome in the world.
Dave Weston and his team at the Harbour Tower are the puppeteers behind this beautifully organized waterway. They’re the eyes of this busy harbour and they communicate with our pilots during taxiing, takeoffs, landings, and docking to ensure safe and seamless arrivals and departures.

On the harbour’s busiest summer days each of the four controllers on duty will handle on average 120 aircraft movements. With a towering vantage point, Dave and his team have the best view of the city, and most importantly, the best view of Vancouver Harbour. And, just like the roadways in Vancouver, the morning rush-hour and afternoon crawl while factoring in challenges such as weather, boat, and air traffic, makes for an exciting day’s work.
Over the last three decades, Harbour Air has transported more than ten million passengers, and Dave or his team have been key in maintaining our industry-leading safety record. We chatted with Dave about life at the Harbour Tower and what it’s like working as an air traffic controller.
All in a Tower Day’s Work: Q&A with Air Traffic Control

Q: What does a typical day look like for you? Do you have a daily routine?
Dave: As supervisor I usually begin my day by looking over the entire operation – status of the equipment, scheduling of staff, weather. If my schedule permits, I like to control airplanes for a while before returning to the office where I take care of a variety of tasks. Throughout the day I will sit in the tower to watch the controllers work. The regular control staff spend their day rotating between working positions and taking relief breaks.
Q: How many pilots do you communicate with in a day?
Dave: Many of the pilots fly the same airplane on the same return trips several times a day. There are also other pilots flying through the airspace too of course, and over a day a controller at Vancouver Harbour will probably talk to a few dozen different pilots.
Q: Can you tell us about the constant communication between the many control towers throughout our routes and pilots?
Dave: Vancouver Harbour Tower works closely with Vancouver Tower as well as the Vancouver Area Control Centre, two different Air Traffic Control units which share airspace boundaries. Most flights are coordinated using sate-of-the-art touch screen displays that track flight progress. All three units also keep in touch with each other using hotlines – open phone lines that allow controllers to talk to each other instantly.

Tower Experience
Q: What is the training like to become an air traffic controller? How many hours of training?
Dave: Training to work at Harbour Tower with no prior experience will take the better part of a year which will involve about 6 months of basic training in a classroom and a simulator, and about 6 months of on-the-job training. Altogether it takes many thousands of hours of work.
Q: What is your experience working in air traffic control?
Dave: After basic training I earned my air traffic control licence at Sault Ste. Marie Tower in Ontario. After two and a half years there I applied to be supervisor at Vancouver Harbour Tower where I had to first train and qualify, and I’ve been here since then.
Q: Do you remember your first day working at the Harbour Tower? What was that like?
Dave: The first day when you show up for training is both exciting and overwhelming. Vancouver Harbour is a dynamic place to work with many challenges. The first day after you qualify is also very exciting as you start talking to airplanes all on your own.

Experts Perspective
Q: After working at the Harbour Tower for many years, do you recognize the voices of the pilots you talk with daily?
Dave: Vancouver Harbour is unique in that the same pilots leave and return many times a day, and many of those pilots make a long career flying out of Vancouver Harbour. We encourage the regular pilots to visit the tower and many pilots and controllers know each other by name.
Q: Any words of wisdom for future air traffic controllers?
Dave: Controllers come from all walks of life – you don’t even have to be an aviation enthusiast to be good at this, though it certainly helps. If you like the idea of working in a high-paced, dynamic environment where you are expected to exert tremendous responsibility, think about giving it a shot. www.navcanada.ca
Next time you’re walking in Coal Harbour take a moment to look up to spot the Harbour Tower or if you’re sitting co-pilot listen for radio calls between the Harbour Tower and our pilots.

Thursday, May 16 2019, the founder and CEO of BC-born Harbour Air Group and Harbour Air Seaplanes, Greg McDougall, was inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame. On the heels of its plans to convert one of the airline’s aircrafts and launch the first all-electric commercial flight, McDougall is now one of 237 individuals honoured for their contribution to Canadian aviation.
“It’s an incredible experience to reflect back on the history and milestone moments of Harbour Air that brought us here tonight,” said Greg McDougall, founder & CEO of Harbour Air Seaplanes. “To be surrounded by industry leaders and aviation champions, I am extremely proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish and humbled to be amongst these renowned leaders of innovation and aviation.”

Surrounded by industry pioneers, McDougall took the opportunity to unveil the first look at the Harbour Air’s ePlane design, which will convert one of the fleet’s existing DHC-2 de Havilland Beaver aircraft powered by the magni500, a 750 horsepower (HP) all-electric motor. The aircraft is currently being overhauled with plans for the first all-electric test flight expected to take place in November 2019.
Canada has a longstanding history of innovation and leadership in the aviation industry. Harbour Air’s partnership with magniX, the company powering the electric aviation revolution, is another example of harbour Air’s commitment to innovation and aviation leadership.
“Our steadfast focus on safety, innovation and service was the breakthrough of our operation and certainly its ongoing success, “said McDougall. “We are once again pushing the boundaries of aviation by becoming the first commercial aircraft to be powered by electric propulsion. We are excited to bring commercial electric aviation to the Pacific Northwest, turning our seaplanes into ePlanes.”
The 2019 inductions will be the 46th annual celebration of Canadian aviation accomplishments and will bring to 237 the number of Canadians who have been installed as Members of the Hall. In addition, 23 organizations have been honored, receiving the Belt of Orion Award of Excellence.

Stop and Sip: Five coffee shops to visit in Victoria
The charming cobblestone streets and old brick buildings of Victoria, BC play a background to the very serious pastime of coffee drinking. Throughout the small city, you will find no shortage of locations to satisfy your craving for anything from a triple-shot no foam soy latte to a classic cup of joe. Here are five must-visit coffee shops to stop and sip with the locals.
—
Discovery Coffee
664 Discovery Street | 18 minute walk | 7 minute cab ride
Discovery Coffee has perfected slow batch roasting and found access to the notes and undertones of layers of flavours. Located just outside of the central hub of the city, this little shop is worth going out of your way for. In the morning when the espresso machine is working at full tilt, you can let your nose lead you to the door. This founding location (there are now five others in Victoria) is perfectly situated on Discovery Street, nestled between Douglas and Government.
The cafe is divided into two spaces to best suit the needs of the visitors. If you just pop in for a cup, you can hang out in the bustling main café. If you are planning on staying a little longer, settle in to the working lounge where you will find large tables with outlets, free wifi, and large windows letting in the sunshine. The rocker vibes and hip employees keep the playlists tuned into the best tracks and are keen to help you decide if you are in the mood for a creamy espressos, cold-brew, nitro-brew, or classic pour-over. This shop takes their coffee seriously, and we thank them for that. Since all beans are roasted in house be sure to grab a bag before your flight home.

Bean Around the World
533 Fisgard Street | 10 minute walk | 5 minute cab ride
Quietly nestled between a boutique storefront and a heritage apartment building, this hidden gem is one you won’t want to miss. Known for the friendly staff, baked goods, and amazing lunch specials, this spot has everything you’re looking for. As you walk through the front door, you will be greeted with the intense aroma of freshly baked banana bread and espresso. Don’t forget to take a look around to notice the historic brick walls, collection of antiques, and a large ladder (which the baristas climb to retrieve more beans from the loft). All of this, and a hanging canoe above the foyer gives the place an eclectic and welcoming feel that will make you want to stay and sip for a while. This location is only minutes away from our Victoria Harbour Air terminal in the heart of the historic Chinatown district.

Caffe Fantastico
965 Kings Road| 10 minute cab ride | 32 minute walks
If you stop to listen, you can hear the quiet buzz of locals lining up for a fresh brew of morning espresso. The approachable and genuine staff are masters at creating handcrafted lattes, americanos, and a local favourite – an almond milk cortado [smaller than a latte, but larger than a macchiato]. Their roasting facility next door gives you the inside peek on how coffee transforms from a green bean to a perfect beverage, every time. This local favourite is a morning go-to for Victorians and out of towners and is a leader in the Pacific North West coffee roasting community. The freshly roasted coffee aroma, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and locally sourced baked goods have Caffe Fantastico living up to its name. Swing by their shop for a java to go, or stay and enjoy a bite from their breakfast menu.

Hide & Seek Coffee
2207 Oak Bay Avenue | 14 minute cab ride | 55 minute walk
The birthplace of Waffle Sunday, knitting nights, and Origin Book Club, this place has more to offer than just great coffee. Located in the quaint yet bustling neighborhood of Oak Bay, this new addition is making lots of chatter among locals. The charming space is open and bright with perfect details that bring visitors a comforting and familiar feel. A beautifully custom-built wooden bar, chic retro furniture, and colourful art is purposefully placed upon the walls to give the space a refreshing and intimate feel. The founders, husband and wife duo, Jesse and Jaimie Owens, are often in the cafe, crafting up coffees or making Jaimie’s famous strawberry shortcake waffles. Hide and Seek Coffee is a place where the founders are just as epic as their selection of multi-origin beans. The place will make you want to hide out in one of their cozy chairs and seek new friendships with the unique folks who walk through the door.
—
Union Pacific Coffee
537 Herald Street | 12 minute walk | 5 minute cab ride
Carefully tucked within Victoria’s industrial district, Union Pacific is the perfect location for a morning or afternoon caffeine boost. This cafe is known for perfecting the art of “the usual” and giving a creative twist to breakfast and lunch classics. As you enter you immediately notice the collection of antiques and hand painted décor – large sliding barn doors, heritage window frames, industrial- style bar seating and perfectly strung market lights. Every item has a story which has been handpicked and refurbished by co-owners Candy and Jim Walmsey; creating an industrial-farm-house vibe. Rest easy during your Sunday sleep-in, because their breakfast menu is available all day. After you’ve taken in the home-style feels and welcoming decor, venture outside to take advantage of the sun-lit patio. You may notice similarities to the iconic Jam Café – located just across the street – Jim and Candy are the creative geniuses of two of Victoria’s most famous spots.
